Laser hair removal
Light absorbed by the pigment in a hair follicle destroys the tissue that grows the hair, and little else.
- Treatment time
- 10–30 min
- Downtime
- 0–1 days
- Sessions
- 5–8 sessions
How it works
The laser is absorbed by melanin in the hair and the resulting heat damages the follicle. This only works on hairs in their growth phase, and not every hair is in that phase at once — which is why a course spaced weeks apart is needed to clear an area.
Used for
- Reducing constant shaving and waxing
- Areas where ingrown hairs cause inflammation
- Large or frequently groomed areas: underarms, legs, face
Cautions
- White and very fair hair has no pigment to absorb the light, so results are poor
- Tanned skin burns more easily — postpone the session
- Five or more sessions at four to eight week intervals is the norm, not one visit
Aftercare
- Avoid hot water and sauna for 24 hours
- Shave rather than wax or pluck for two weeks
- Use sunscreen diligently on exposed areas
